Abstract
This research was conducted to evaluate the acute toxicity effects of ethanol extract from the stem of the kesum plant (Polygonum minus Huds) on alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). Toxicity tests were performed by administering the extract orally in three different dosage groups: 500 mg/Kg body weight, 1000 mg/Kg body weight, 2000 mg/Kg body weight, and a control group that only received food and water. Observations were made after 15 days by checking the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the rats. The results of this study showed that there was an increase in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in the groups with doses of 1000 mg/kg body weight and 2000 mg/kg body weight compared to the control group (p<0.05), whereas the 500 mg/kg body weight dosage group showed no significant difference. These findings indicate that administering high doses of ethanol extract from kesum stems can have toxic effects on the liver, as demonstrated by the increased levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
