Abstract

Background: One of the childbirth complications is prolonged labour, which reaches 69,000 deaths (2.8% of all maternal deaths worldwide). Delivery is considered normal when uterine contractions cause the cervix to dilate (open) and stretch. Normal labour occurs in several stages, namely the early (latent) stage and when the cervix dilates more than 4 cm (Harismayanti, Retni, & Kohongia, 2023). The results of basic medical research in 2018 showed an increase in the rate of prolonged labour from year to year by 79.3% in 2019 (lower than in 2018). Similarly, prolonged labour decreased in 2020; there were only 4,046,521 patients who gave birth assisted by medical personnel in health facilities compared to the target standard of 4,984,432 patients. In other words, the coverage rate for deliveries in health facilities only reached 79.3% (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2018).
Case Report: Comprehensive midwifery care was performed on Mrs. N and her baby from June 11- February 03, 2023. The type of the data was primary. The data collecting techniques were anamneses, examination, observation, and documentation. The data, then, were analyzed by comparing the data gathered and the existing theory.
Discussion: This case report details complete midwifery care on Mrs. N, a patient with a prolonged second stage of labor, and her baby using the SOAP method to investigate the gap between the case and the theory.
Conclusion: Comprehensive midwifery care for prolonged second-stage of labor has been wholly and procedurally conducted for Mrs N and her baby using seven-stages of Varney management. However, a gap was found between the case and theory in the birth contraction and the prolonged second-stage management.
