Abstract

Background: The health and well-being of newborns is a top priority in the series of mandatory birth processes conducted by midwives. Other essential aspects of midwifery care for infants include postnatal care, vaccination, nutrition, psychological and emotional support, and health monitoring. In 2022, the infant mortality rate (IMR) in West Kalimantan increased by 24 cases. Infections, including tetanus in newborns, COVID-19, congenital abnormalities, and prematurity contributed to 28 percent of neonatal deaths, while low birth weight (LBW) and prematurity accounted for 30.2%. To address these challenges, the Healthy Indonesia Program focuses on families, and community-based health initiatives employing home visiting strategies are two key approaches aimed at reducing the infant mortality rate.
Case report: Comprehensive midwifery care was administered to Mrs. A's infant at the Titin Widyaningsih Maternity Clinic on November 12, 2023. Six days following the birth, the infant presented with a prolapsed umbilical cord, which was addressed using sterile gauze. Data for this report were collected through anamnesis, observation, examination, and documentation.
Discussion: This report offers an overview of the midwifery care rendered to the newborn, highlighting the methodologies of anamnesis, observation, examination, and documentation.
Conclusion: The midwifery care provided to Mrs. A's infant conformed to Varney's seven steps. Nonetheless, it is imperative to recognize the evident disparity between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation
