Abstract
Background : Asphyxia is defined as the failure to breathe spontaneously and regularly shortly after birth. Low birth weight babies are newborns whose weight at birth of less than 2500 grams to 2499 grams. The incidence of neonatal asphyxia and low birth weight are 369 infants with neonatal asphyxia and 641 infants with low birth weight.
Purpose : This study aims to determine the relationship of low birth weight with neonatal asphyxia.
Research Methods : This case control study using retrospektif properties. Samples in this study were taken from the total number of the populasi who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total population of 369 infants, sampling technique in the case of this study were taken by purposive sampling as many 79 cases and control samples using systematic random sampling technique that is as many 79 control.
Result : Based on the results of the chi-square test CI 95 % (α = 0,05) obtainable = 11,253 dan probability (ρ value) 0,001 or ρ < 0,05. To the level of exposure to long fetches values obtained OR 3,173, meaning that low birth weight babies have a greater possibility of 3,173 times will experience neonatal asphyxia when compared to infants who were not low birth weight.
Conclusion : There is a relationship between low birth weight with incidence of neonatal asphyxia.
