Abstract
Background: One of the main complications in childbirth is prolonged labor or prolonged second stage of labor, where there are around 69,000, or 2.8%, maternal deaths from all childbirth cases worldwide. Prolonged second stage or prolonged labor is the final stage of delivery. This process lasts for two hours in primigravida cases and one hour in multigravida cases. Prolonged second stage can lead to asphyxia and IUFD (intrauterine fetal death) in the fetus, as well as infections, maternal exhaustion, and dehydration.
Case Report: Mrs. Y received was treated at dr. Soedarso Hospital in Pontianak City through a cesarean section delivery. The methods of information collection included anamnesis, observation, examination, treatment, and documentation. The data were then analyzed by comparing the collected data with the accepted theory.
Discussion: This case study described the midwifery care provided to a mother experiencing pathological labor with a prolonged second stage of labor lasting more than 2 hours in a primigravida, using the 7-step Varney management approach.
Conclusion: The implementation of midwifery care was carried out using the 7-step Varney management approach. Subjective data indicated differences in the causes and management of the prolonged second stage of labor. Finally, after all the data were collected, it could be concluded that the analysis and findings of the objective data were consistent with the theory.
