Abstract
Skin infections are among the most common health problems in Indonesia. Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit caused by the proliferation of bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) extract against the growth of Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. The extract was prepared using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as the extraction solvent. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using the well diffusion method with several extract concentrations. The observed parameter was the diameter of the inhibition zone formed around the wells after the incubation period. The results demonstrated that pandan leaf extract exhibited antibacterial activity against both test bacteria, as indicated by the formation of inhibition zones at all tested concentrations. The diameter of the inhibition zone increased with increasing extract concentration. The 75% extract concentration exhibited the highest antibacterial activity compared to the other concentrations. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences among the extract concentrations (p < 0.05). In conclusion, Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb. leaf extract is effective as an antibacterial agent against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus, indicating its potential as a natural ingredient for the treatment of acne
